The team developed an innovative mobile application with the aim of transforming inhaled medication adherence into a positive experience, through gamification and social support, while enabling verified medication monitoring and symptom monitoring. The adherence monitoring tool only uses the smartphone camera to recognize the inhaler and read the value in the numerical dose counter.

mINSPIRE – mHealth to measure and improve adherence to medication in chronic obstructive respiratory diseases – generalisation and evaluation of gamification, peer support and advanced image processing technologies
Inspirers-HTN is a mobile application to support the treatment of hypertension, promoting self-management regarding blood pressure monitoring and adherence to therapy. It allows the user to register a pharmacological treatment plan, to customize alerts to take the medication and to measure blood pressure. However, its most innovative feature, which is at an advanced stage of development, is an image detection tool which will allow it to identify the number of pills taken from a blister using the smartphone’s camera, and thus to objectively quantify adherence to therapy. Also, it will be able to capture the blood pressure values from the screen of automated blood pressure measuring devices. The app processes gathered data regarding adherence and blood pressure values and generates reports, which the user can securely share with his health care team, fostering shared decisions. Finally, Inspirers-HTN delivers short educational videos, regarding the correct method to measure blood pressure, how to interpret the blood pressure values and other relevant information for the people with hypertension.
